This story did not result in a death, but it's a true and deeply odd account.
Donald Wright was engaged in some home repairs, and was standing several rungs up on a ladder using a power drill, when he slipped and fell off the ladder. He struck his head when he landed, rendering himself unconscious. When he came to, Mr. Wright discovered that the drill bit had become imbedded in his skull.
Perhaps its presence caused the synaptic collapse that led him to determine his subsequent course of action. He figured that plugging the drill in, putting it in reverse, turning it on, and backing the lodged bit out of his skull, was a better course of action than simply disconnecting the bit from the drill unit and seeking assistance.
After successfully backing the bit out of his skull, Mr. Wright left his apartment and headed out to the street to flag down a helpful passing motorist. Halfway down the stairs, though, he realized that he had left the light on and the door open. That would frighten his wife! He went back upstairs, turned off the light, and locked the door before finally making it down to the street and passing out.
